Hey welcome back, we started second term with an important riflession about our design space. That's only to be ready to MICRO CHALLANGE (I'm so excited).
So the first things is to developed and increase the design space, obv is still in working. If are interested have a look in this figma schedule. It's help me a lot during my MDEF's journey. Up in the figma windows you can drive in all the step thats driven me in the final design space exposed at the design dialogues 02.
With maxi we did an intervention for explore different communal livings projects. We want to work with communities and understand why a communities is like that. How and Why is the key point of this intervention. We are thinking about do the micro challange in a visited field.
Here there is a notion link with all the intervention
In this intervention I'm investigating my reletions with object made by wastes. Some day before it started, I found in metro a electrical cable collector made by plywood and carboard from Leviton coorporations; that is a a single-source global manufacturer of end-to-end fiber and copper cabling systems (https://leviton.com/products/network-solutions/emea)
I immediatly fell in love with it ...
I think that this emotion happens because it is an object that in that exactly moment has funcitonality and a meaning. Every body just look at him, instead I used it as a furniture for waiting the metro. This is a my obsession, find hidden layer in what object could explain and what I could immage with those. Obv I had a funny moments with that, I sit in inside the metro with that and a lot of people look at me in a strange way. We took metro to go in Elisava and listen Jess' Talk about how design is not only a practice to design estetichs stuff, but is a work where designer has to have a role for changing behaviors with staff/artifacts/services designed by us.
During the Beyond Session I use this object as a foot rest for chilling and listening at the amazing talk landed by Jess, I think this gave me a lot of suggestion for my design research. When the talks ends I use that like an African drum, I mean I only just want to have fun with this objects but at the same time give me another suggestion on how an object could became something or change in something just because is you that give different meaning to that.
In this week we had WIP exhibition (thank you Saul) where I prepared an exhibition to triggy some conversations about my topics. Honestly I had this Idea to use this object in the exhibition, but we could only present one object and there wasn't enough space to do what I was thinking. So I used this object only as prop for some photo shoots, here I understood how context affected object and how viceversa object affected context.
Now I'm focus on try to create a coffe table for my house.
I want to use precious plastic to design a cover for the top of the elletrical cable collector and cut with the Cnc Mill a cirlcular shape where apllyed the cover made from precious plastic. (I can't use precious plastic in the past day). The initial ideas was to collect some plastic waste during my walk from estacion Mundet to Valldaura.
So I started to make some experiment and for me was an amazing expirience to experiment and understand what I like and which message I want to leave with my design practies and works. Here I'm showing some frames of me working on this upcyclng practies:
PRECIOUS PLASTICS - molding and melting
CNC MILL - wood and precious plastic cutting
FINAL OUTCOME
Below there are some exercise did during this second term Enjoy it !!!
Toni Navarro landed a class about ethics in design, how technology coshape people begin in the world and transform the spectrum of possibilities human intentions/choices. Design as: MATERIAL form of doing ethics and MEDIATION to constitute moral practies. Design its not just about technologies' functionality, but also is material ethics of mediating roles; where context define use and use define context and where artifcats/stuff/service/technologies are interpretations or appropriation by the users (DESIGN JUSTICE). That's doesn't mean ethics as a driven of shopping or whashing purpose to try so sell more a device or whatever.
Here there is a link about some mine reflection about this class.
Toni Llacer landed a lesson on conducting a methodological research. First of all he explain what it means quality standards (Scientific/Ethical perspective). A good research always follow this 4 step: determinate the research problem, select the appropriate research design, execute the research design and communicate the research results; also is so important calendarize all the step, so you'll have a plan. Remember that your storytelling has to be helpfull for your purpose.
A complete research has to have specific questions and subquestions and specific goal, a question is like a path to follow you're choosing that. There are 3 question's types: Exploratory (insight/decision), Descpritive (how/when/where) and Causal (why/cause-effects). You have two different resourches to answer question and clarify your design research, Primary resource (collect data) and Secondary resource (book, films and documentary).
In your research you'll have two kind of data, Quantitative (measurement) or Qualitative (not measurement). The correct approach with this data is to watch big picture with quantitative data and with qualitative data you could go more deeper in your topics research.
EXERCISE
Research question: Is it possible create a low-tech / DIY movement ? If yes, would it be possible share all the knowledge ? Could Products/Artifacts change present continuos? How is it possible create an alternative presents? Is it possible democatrize some products thanks sharing its process building? ....
Theoretical framework: Create a low-tech / DIY movement by sharing knowledge about products/artifacts' process building, this thanks or a manifesto/book (OFF-LINE) or a website and instagram (ON-LINE). The goal is focused on make stuff/products or artifacts from sustanaible approachs and methodologies and shared its process to democratize it. My research design dream is to sabotage how companies works and survive in this scarcity time. - Low tech magazine - Low-Tech Magazine is an independent publication that promotes sustainable, low-energy solutions by revisiting historical technologies and decentralized systems. It highlights simplicity, durability, and energy efficiency as alternatives to high-tech approaches. - Design for a real world, V. Papanek - Design for the Real World (1971) by Victor Papanek advocates for ethical, sustainable design, prioritizing human needs and environmental responsibility over consumerism. - Acient Apocallypse, Graham Hancock - Ancient Apocalypse by Graham Hancock explores the theory of a lost advanced civilization, proposing that ancient sites may preserve evidence of prehistoric knowledge. - Off the Grid: Survival Ideas for Sustainable Living - - Low-tech approaches for sustainability: key principles from the literature and practice -
Methods: Quantitative data would be any kind of measurement that is helpfull for my story telling. So for examples I could have some measurement collect from my stuff and/or find some data on website. Qualitative data would be try to understand why people has to follow this path, so collect data from interview or 1pp. Experimentation & Prototyping would be my methodologies to answer at my research question, I believe they are fundamentals for my final project.
I will do this after have a good definition of mine research, work in progress in a few day. Okay I have it !!! So let's starts
In order to better understand the current situation and context, we were tasked with mapping the actual actants and agents involved in our project. This in order to understand the full picture of what we are able to intervene or take into consideration when talking about transforming this alternative present we're building into an emergent future. By doing this exercise I was able to actually identify the involved community or group of people to whom I could direct my research
The others exercise is Theory of change, basically we have to define what would be the future of our project and create a trajectory to follow. Honestly this one was a bit more difficult for me, but at least I figured out with some things.
